Chicago born, Atlanta based DJ, producer & label owner Jay Simon first gained notoriety in 2011 with a funky & raw house rework of a Faith Evans classic on Kyle Hall’s Wild Oats label. Emboldened by the DIY ethos of his Detroit peers, Jay launched Must Have Records a year later with the release of Saine’s “Drifter EP”.
Soon after, the release of the Seven Davis Jr’s debut the “One EP”, with support ranging from Moodymann to Morgan Geist, solidified Must Have as a label to watch for quality soulful dance music. Jay’s commitment to quality over quantity continued with the remarkably accomplished untitled debut EP of Bostonian newcomer Renato P. Next up on Must Have is a highly anticipated double 12” gatefold compilation from LA based artists the Teflon Dons who released a series of very limited, and now sought after deep house records in the mid to late 90’s. The release notably includes a collaboration featuring the first released recording of now Grammy-nominated jazz singer, Gregory Porter, as well as 4 previously unreleased songs from the same era.
As a DJ, Jay’s genre and era spanning sets indicate the same commitment to quality demonstrated by his releases on Must Have. Having played alongside Kai Alcé, Omar-S, Maurice Fulton, Beautiful Swimmers, & more, Jay’s undeniably soulful sets reflect a deep love and understanding of underground dance music, and are not to be missed.
